Iranian FM, ICRC Chief Discuss Regional Crises
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Peter Maurer, the chairman of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), exchanged views about a range of issues, including the ongoing humanitarian crises in the Middle East.
In the meeting, held in Tehran on Sunday, Maurer voiced the ICRC’s determination to continue consultations and cooperation with Iran to help end human crises in some regional countries, including Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.
Zarif, for his part, said Iran will try its hardest to relieve the sufferings of the war-torn people in Syria and Yemen and send humanitarian assistance to them.
The two sides also stressed the need to establish an immediate ceasefire in Yemen and dispatch medical and food aid to the people of the Arabian Peninsula country.
Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for almost three years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
