Iran in Contact with Austria over Attack on Envoy’s Residence

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country is in contact with the Austrian government about a Sunday night attack on the residence of the Iranian ambassador in Vienna and has called for stronger protection of diplomatic buildings.

In comments on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said Tehran is in contact with Austrian officials over last night’s incident at the Iranian diplomatic building.

“The assailant was around 26 years old apparently an Austrian national,” the spokesperson said, adding there is still no information on his identity or motives.

“We are in touch with Austrian officials in Vienna and Tehran, and I hope that Austrian police and government authorities would be able to achieve the required outcome in the probe they launched last night,” Qassemi added.

The residence of the Iranian ambassador in Vienna has not suffered damages in the incident, the spokesman added, but noted that a guard at the building has been wounded and admitted to the hospital.

“We have asked the Austrian government to look into the issue as soon as possible, and pay more attention to the protection of Iranian diplomatic premises in that country,” he concluded.
