Syrian Troops Uncover Chemical Weapons Workshop in Eastern Ghouta
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allies uncovered a workshop used by terrorists to manufacture chemical weapons in a recently-liberated area in Eastern Ghouta, a Syrian field commander said.
“…an army unit uncovered it (the workshop) while canvassing operations for defusing IEDs were being carried out after clearing al-Shefounieh town in Douma area of terrorists,” the commander said on Tuesday, according to SANA.
The commander said that the plant, which consists of a two-story building with a basement located between Douma and al-Shefounieh, and that it included a lab for making toxic chemicals containing equipment of Saudi origin and materials and protection gear of Western origin.
He said that the lab contained vials for mixing chemicals as well as vats and mixing and heating equipment, in addition to a variety of materials used to make toxic chemicals and explosives, including substances containing chlorine, as well as Saudi books and papers for the so-called Jaish al-Islam Takfiri outfit.
The commander noted that the building contained high-tech equipment and installations that indicate the involvement of European and Saudi experts and chemists.
Eastern Ghouta, a besieged area on the outskirts of Damascus with some 400,000 people, has witnessed deadly violence over the past few weeks, as Takfiri terrorist outfits have launched mortar attacks on the Syrian capital in the face of an imminent humiliating defeat, killing around 20 civilians in two weeks.
The US and its western and regional allies have often pointed their fingers at the Syrian government for chemical attacks, which Damascus has consistently denied.
Syria surrendered its chemical stockpiles in 2014 under the supervision of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
The discovery of the workshop is yet another revelation in a prolonged debate on who used chemical weapons in Syria.
