Tehran-Baku Ties Have Never Been as Good as Now: Azeri President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Azeri President Ilham Aliyev praised the close relations between his country and neighboring Iran in diverse political fields and called for even closer cooperation in economic areas, including transit and banking.

Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran have never been as good as now, Aliyev said in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Baku on Thursday.

He further said despite serious security threats against the Middle East region, Iran is a secure and stable country and called for closer cooperation between Tehran and Baku in transit and banking ties.

Zarif, for his part, said the Islamic Republic welcomes multilateral cooperation among regional countries and regards it as a necessity to counter security threats posed by terrorism, particularly the remnants of Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terror group.

Zarif paid an official visit to Baku on Thursday to attend a quadrilateral meeting between Iran, Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan about ways to boost regional cooperation.

Earlier on Tuesday, delegations from Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan held a new session of a joint commission on mutual cooperation in Tehran, finalizing 12 agreements that the two sides had drafted in the past.

The 12th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation was co-chaired by Iranian Economy Minister Masoud Karbasian and Mustafayev.

Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various areas.

In February 2016, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Tehran, during which the two sides signed eleven memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of fields.
