Scores Injured in Cologne Tram Collision

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Two trams have collided in central Cologne, injuring more than 40 people. The trams slammed into each other at Eifelwall train station, southwest of the city center. Police said alcohol may have been a factor.

Scores of people were injured in the German city of Cologne on Thursday night after two trams collided.

Cologne police said 43 people were injured in the crash, with one sustaining critical injuries, Deutsche Welle reported.

The first tram was stopped at Eifelwall train station in the southwest of the city when the second tram crashed into the back of it. The impact caused the glass windows in both carriages to shatter.

Authorites said the driver of the second tram was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. The Cologne public transport company KVB wrote on Twitter that they were "deeply shocked" by the crash.

"In our memory, there's never been anything like this at the KVB," they added.

Cologne police and emergency services were at the scene. Parts of the city's tram network were shut down and all nearby road traffic was diverted.
