Rouhani Congratulates Armenia’s New President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Armen Sarkissian on his election as the president of Armenia, expressing the hope that Tehran-Yerevan relations would develop during his term in office.

In a message to Sarkissian released on Saturday, Rouhani offered his “sincere congratulations” to the Armenian president-elect.

He further said that given the strong cultural and historical ties between the Iranian and Armenian nations, there are numerous capacities that should be tapped to boost cooperation between the two countries.

The Iranian president further wished health and success for Sarkissian and prosperity for the people of the Caucasian country.

Armenia’s parliament chose Sarkissian as the country’s new president on March 2, in a vote that is meant to herald the start of a power shift to the country’s prime minister and parliament.

Sarkissian, 64, a former prime minister who once served as the country’s ambassador to Britain, was elected to serve a seven-year term.
