Belarus Keen to Boost Military Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Defense minister of Belarus voiced his country’s eagerness to promote military and defense cooperation with Iran, praising Tehran for its leading role in the fight against terrorism.

In a meeting with his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of a security conference in Moscow on Tuesday, Major General Andrei Ravkov hoped that formation of a joint cooperation commission between Belarus and Iran would bring together military experts from the two countries and pave the way for enhanced defense ties.

Belarus has always hailed Iran for its role in the war against terrorism, Ravkov added.

For his part, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami stressed the need for the expansion of military interaction between Tehran and Minsk.

Pointing to the Western sanctions imposed on Iran in the past years, the general said the Islamic Republic has turned those challenges into opportunities and achieved self-sufficiency be relying on domestic resources.

Iran and Belarus have developed good relations in recent years, particularly in the economic and trade sectors and have signed a number of agreements to shore up bilateral cooperation.
