Iranian President Highlights Role of Muslim Leaders in Tackling Extremism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In a message on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the major role that heads of Muslim states could play in countering extremism and standing against the hegemonic powers’ excessive demands.

In his message, released on Wednesday, Rouhani congratulated heads of Muslim countries on the occasion.

He further said the role of Muslim countries’ leaders in safeguarding the moderate nature of Islam and countering violence and extremism has become more significant than ever in the current situation.

Islamic nations should stand against the hegemonic powers’ excessive demands and violation of agreements, the president also said, calling for collective efforts to bring peace, justice and calm for all people in the world, particularly Muslims.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a celebration of the descent of the Word of God, the Quran, from Heaven to the earth.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam. Abstaining from food and drink, and from other bodily pleasures, is a crucial element of the observation. To partake in the blessings of Ramadan, able-bodied women and men, also girls and boys who have reached the age of religious observance, are required to fast for the duration of this month.

At the end of each fasting day, Muslims break their day-long fast with an “Iftar” meal.
