Iran Warns Canada against Making ‘Strategic Mistake’
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the passage of a motion through Canada’s House of Commons on limiting ties with Tehran, warning that a final ratification of such a plan and turning it into law will be a “strategic mistake with destructive consequences.”
In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the Canadian House of Commons’ “unconstructive move” to pass a motion to limit ties with Iran and the accusations raised against Iranian military organizations amid the parliamentary debates on that motion.
Though the motion is in its early stages and would need to go through other stages before turning into a law, it will be a “strategic and fundamental mistake with destructive consequences” if ultimately ratified, he warned.
Tabling such a motion reveals the Canadian legislators’ lack of accurate and sufficient information about the Islamic Republic of Iran’s clear and logical stances against the ominous phenomenon of terrorism, Qassemi underlined.
In the past decades, the Iranian people themselves have been victims of violent terrorism sponsored by certain foreign countries, the spokesman said, adding that Iran, based on its moral principles and cultural teachings and given the spread of terrorism and extremism in the world, has been and will remain to be a pioneer of the war on terrorism.
“The world’s public opinion will never accept the bogus and false accusation that Iran supports terrorism,” he went on to say.
Warning against the consequences of ratification of such an unfounded motion by Canada, Qassemi expressed the hope that the Ottawa government would prevent the final adoption of the motion and its destructive effects on the bilateral relations with a thorough knowledge of Iran’s clear policies.
The reaction came after liberals in the House of Commons of Canada passed a strongly-worded conservative motion condemning the Iranian government on Tuesday.
It calls on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to “abandon its current plan and immediately cease any and all negotiations or discussions” to restore diplomatic relations, and to immediately list the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity under Canada’s Criminal Code.
