European Envoys Discuss Yemen Crisis in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A number of European ambassadors to Tehran gathered in Iran’s Foreign Ministry for talks on deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Yemen and the ways to alleviate the suffering of Yemeni people.

The Monday meeting in Tehran was attended by Iranian foreign minister's special assistant for political affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, the ambassadors of France, Britain and Italy, and a top German diplomat in charge during the ambassador’s absence.

In the gathering, the Iranian and European diplomatic delegations discussed the dire humanitarian conditions in Yemen and the approaches to resolving crisis in the war-hit Arab country.

Deploring an exacerbation of humanitarian situation in Yemen in the wake of intensified Saudi-led military strikes, Jaberi Ansari reiterated that the only way to settle the Yemen crisis is dialogue, political agreements and partnership of all Yemeni parties.

The Iranian diplomat also denounced the Western arms sales to members of the Saudi-led coalition against Yemen, saying one cannot talk about peace and human rights while signing multi-billion-dollar contracts with the countries involved in the military campaign against Yemen.

The European envoys also voiced concern about the humanitarian situation in Yemen, stressing the need for political settlement of the conflicts.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and a number of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
