TEHRAN (Tasnim) – With the coming into operation of Iran’s new petrochemical projects, the country’s annual capacity to produce petrochemicals hit more than 65.5 million tons on Tuesday.

Three petrochemical projects were inaugurated in the southern port city of Assalouyeh on Tuesday during a visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh.

The projects include Marjan methanol plant, the Phase 3 of Petrochemical Complex, and the phase 1 of Damavand Petrochemical Company Power Plant.

With the inauguration of the projects, the country’s official capacity to produce petrochemicals has reached 65,550,000 tons.

The nominal production capacity of Marjan methanol plant, whose construction began in 2011 in an area of 7 hectares, stands at 1.65 million tons annually.

Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical production over the past few years.

The Islamic Republic, which holds the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves and the largest natural gas reserves, is determined to become the biggest petrochemical producer in the Middle East.
