Iran Urges CICA to Counter Unilateralism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran called on members of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) to join hands in countering unilateralism, sanctions and use of force in the world.

Iranian deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Gholam Hossein Dehqani, delivered a speech to a gathering of foreign ministers of CICA member states, held on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In his address, the Iranian diplomat called on the CICA member states to stand united against unilateral policies, imposition of sanctions and resorting to force against sovereign states.

Deploring the US government’s illegal pullout from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and its unilateral policies towards international issues, Dehqani urged all UN members to avert a reemergence of unilateralism in the world.

He further warned about the threat of terrorism in the world, saying remnants of the terrorist groups that have suffered defeats in Syria and Iraq are trying to recover and move to other regions like Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The Iranian deputy minister also denounced efforts to foment Islamophobia and link violent extremism to Islam, saying failure to counter Islamophobia has resulted in a rise in violence and extremism in the world.

CICA is a multi-national forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia. Its member states are committed to the UN Charter and believe that peace and security in Asia can be achieved through dialogue and cooperation leading to a common indivisible area of security in Asia.
