Iraq’s Incoming PM, Iranian Envoy Hold Talks in Baghdad

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iraq’s Prime Minister-Designate Adel Abdul-Mahdi held a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi for talks on stronger cooperation between the two neighbors.

In the Tuesday meeting in Baghdad, Masjedi congratulated Abdul-Mahdi on his new post, reaffirming Iran’s support for Iraq in its future stage.

The two officials also discussed ways to maintain and boost the economic and business cooperation between the two neighbors.

On September 2, Iraq’s new parliament elected as president Kurdish politician Barham Salih, who immediately named Adel Abdul Mahdi prime minister-designate, ending months of deadlock after a national election in May.

Abdul Mahdi is a Shiite politician who served as vice president from 2005 to 2011.
