US Gives Iran Memo on Treaty of Amity

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said the country has received a memorandum announcing the US withdrawal from the Treaty of Amity.

Iran has received a memorandum from the US on its abrogation of the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations and Consular Rights, Bahram Qassemi told reporters at a press conference on Monday.

He also said that the process of US exit from the Treaty of Amity, signed with Iran in 1955, will take one year to be completed.

According to the spokesman, Iran is planning further measures to deal with the US move, saying that they will be made public later, hopefully before November 4, when new US sanctions on Iran come into force.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on October 3 that Washington was pulling out of the six-decade-old treaty with Iran that had provided a basis for normalizing relations between the two countries, including diplomatic and economic exchanges.

The US move came hours after the International Court of Justice ordered the United States to ensure that a new round of American sanctions imposed against Tehran this year did not prevent food, medicine and aircraft parts from reaching Iran.
