ICJ Ruling on Iran Sanctions Binding for All Countries: Envoy
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to the Netherlands argued that the International Court of Justice’s recent verdict prohibiting restrictions on Iran is binding not only for the US, but also for the whole world countries.
Speaking at a press conference in the Netherlands on Wednesday, Alireza Jahangiri said the ICJ’s ruling on preserving Iran’s rights and the prohibition of restrictions on Iran must be respected by the US and all other countries.
“Under the court’s (ICJ’s) ruling, all countries must refrain from cooperating with or helping the US with the imposition of unilateral sanctions in the areas subject to the verdict,” the envoy added.
Some European airlines’ decision to suspend flights to Iran or their refusal to provide fuel for the Iranian passenger planes run counter to the humanitarian principles and must be immediately reviewed, he underlined.
Jahangir also explained that the US government’s withdrawal from the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations and Consular Rights -signed with Iran in 1955- was in violation of the ICJ’s ruling that had asked the parties to refrain from any action which might aggravate or extend the dispute before the court or make it more difficult to resolve.
On October 3, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Washington was pulling out of the six-decade-old Treaty of Amity with Iran that had provided a basis for normalizing relations between the two countries, including diplomatic and economic exchanges.
The US move came hours after the International Court of Justice ordered the United States to ensure that a new round of American sanctions imposed against Tehran this year did not prevent food, medicine and aircraft parts from reaching Iran.
