Syria Army Says Daesh Cleared from Southeastern Desert
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian army confirmed that Daesh terrorists had been cleared from a rugged area in southeastern Syria, where they had been holding out for months against a campaign to defeat them.
In a statement late on Monday, Syria’s army high command said it had taken full control of the Tulul al-Safa heights, a volcanic plateau east of Sweida province, Reuters reported.
The area was Daesh’s last holdout in southern Syria and the Syrian armed forces recovered a large amount of light and medium weaponry, the statement said.
The terror group rampaged through the city of Sweida in July from the direction of desert east of the city, killing more than 200 people and detonating suicide vests.
Syrian troops defeated Daesh late last year and took back all the urban bastions the terror group once had under its control, but the group's remnants have been trying to regroup and have mounted a series of hit-and-run attacks.
