Zarif Hits Back at Trump for Calling Iran ‘Terrorist Nation’

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif took a swipe at US President Donald Trump for calling Iran a terrorist nation.

In a post on his Twitter account on Wednesday, Zarif lashed out at Trump for his hostility toward the Iranian nation.

“A nation IS its people,” Zarif reminded Trump, adding, “Repeatedly calling Iran a ‘terrorist nation’ reveals hostility toward an entire people & exposes the real reason for targeting them with your illegal sanctions.”

“But US hawks’ dream of 'uprooting the Iranian nation’ will never be realized,” the top Iranian diplomat underlined.

He was responding to Trump’s new insulting comments about Iran.

Trump declared Tuesday he would not punish Saudi Arabia for the murder of US-based columnist Jamal Khashoggi — making clear in an exclamation-filled statement that the benefits of good relations with the kingdom outweigh the possibility its crown prince ordered the killing.

He later told reporters “foolishly canceling these contracts (with Saudi Arabia)” worth billions of dollars would only benefit Russia and China, which would be next in line to supply the weapons.

Asked by a reporter if he was saying that human rights are too expensive to fight for, Trump said “No, I’m not saying that at all.” But then he switched the subject to the “terrorist nation” of Iran rather than any actions by Saudi Arabia.
