Iran Bemoans Mistreatment of Travelers in Georgia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed Tehran’s protest against Georgia for the neighboring country’s mistreatment of Iranian nationals and travelers.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s director general for consular affairs had a meeting with Georgia’s Ambassador to Tehran Ioseb Chakhvashvili on Wednesday to voice complaint about the Caucasian country’s inappropriate behavior towards the Iranian citizens.

In the gathering, the Iranian diplomat highlighted the close relations between Tehran and Tbilisi, saying that a rise in the number of deportation of Iranians from Georgia runs counter to the bilateral agreements on visa free travel and to the growing bilateral ties, Press TV reported.

For his part, the Georgian ambassador expressed regret over the recent cases of mistreatment of Iranians at the border, saying Georgia’s government and nation have respect for the Iranian people.

The Iranian embassy in Georgia has confirmed reports on December 2 about the deportation or entry ban of dozens of Iranian citizens from Georgia.

Iran’s embassy in Tbilisi says it is pursuing the issue with Georgian authorities and asking for clarification of immigration laws and regulations and satisfactory explanation for the deportations.
