Iranian Army to Stage Wargames by Next Few Months

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian Army Ground Force plans to stage two large-scale military drills by the end of the current Iranian year (ends on March 20, 2014), a senior Army commander announced.

Commander of the Iranian Army Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan told reporters today that his forces would conduct two drills before the end of the current Iranian year.

He explained that the drills would be held after final approval by the country's Armed Forces General Staff.

Pourdastan furthr said army has conducted 6 wargames during the last 9 months, the largest one was Qamar-e bani-Hashem conducted in Iran's southwestern regions last month.

Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

Iran has repeatedly stated that its military might poses no threat to other countries, reiterating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

Tehran maintains that the maneuvers are defensive in nature and meant to convey a message of peace and friendship to regional countries.
