71 Killed in Cholera Outbreak in Northern Nigeria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - At least 71 people have been confirmed dead from an outbreak of cholera in northwestern state of Kano in Nigeria, an official said.
The epidemic ravaged some communities in parts of Kano state, Abdulsalam Nasidi, project director of Nigeria's Center for Diseases Control under Federal Ministry of Health, told reporters, and a total of 2,165 cases had been recorded in affected areas in the past two months.
The government has sent a team to the state to assist in controlling the spread of the disease, and has donated drugs to try and combat the outbreak, Xinhua reported.
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea, which can lead to serious dehydration and prove fatal if not properly treated.
Northern Nigeria has suffered several epidemics such as cholera, measles and meningitis over past years.
