Dissolving Clerical Council Signifies Manama’s Helplessness: Opposition Member

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior member of Bahrain’s Al Wefaq National Islamic Society described the Al Khalifa regime’s move to dissolve a prominent clerical council as a sign of the regime’s helplessness.

Hadi Al-Mousawi said the judiciary’s decision to disband the Islamic Scholars Council came after the regime failed to bring the council under its control.

He also dismissed as “ridiculous” the remarks by Bahrain’s Minister of State for Information Affairs Samira Rajab accusing Al Wefaq society of exploiting the council to provoke sectarian troubles.

He referred to the demolition of more than 30 mosques belonging to Shiite by the regime as what can be cosidered as a sectarian measure, Al-Manar network reported.

Al-Mousawi underlined that the council does not belong to any specific sect or ethnic group and that it has spared no efforts to uphold national unity in Bahrain.

He further reiterated the opposition’s readiness for serious dialogue but at the same tine noted that the regime’s behavior shows no sign of seriousness in talks.

Meanwhile, opposition parties in Bahrain have strongly denounced the “vindictive and politicized” decision to dissolve the council, saying it has been punished for its support for the legitimate demands of the people of Bahrain.

“The dissolving of the council will threaten the peace and security of the country and lead to more unrest,” they said according to the website of the Al Wefaq Society.

The opposition pointed out that such a decision reveals the authority’s intolerant mentality that cannot deal with any different views and exposes the fake claims of democracy that are raised by the regime's public relations firms in all media and international forums.

Bahrain has been the scene of a popular uprising since mid-February 2011. The protesters initially called for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy, but the regime’s heavy-handed crackdown on them soon prompted an outright call for the ouster of Al Khalifa regime.
