Comprehensive Deal on Iran’s N. Program Achievable: Swedish FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt hailed an interim nuclear deal between Iran and the six major world powers over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program, saying a comprehensive ultimate accord is within reach provided that the both sides show determination.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Tuesday, Bildt elaborated on the ways to settle the west’s standoff over Iran’s nuclear program, and said, “Reaching a comprehensive agreement is beneficial for the both negotiating parties, and if there is determination to resolve this issue, it will definitely yield results.”

The Swedish minister arrived in the Iranian capital on Monday for a three-day official visit.

Bildt further expressed the hope that the new atmosphere after the Geneva nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany), which he said has paved the way for further international interaction with Iran, would result in the ultimate removal of sanctions on Tehran.

The visiting Swedish minister went on to say that the Obama administration is resolved to honor its commitments to the Geneva deal, although there are dissenting voices inside the US.

“This is the diplomats’ duty to move the right job forward in spite of the different voices,” he explained.

On November 24, 2013, Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as P5+1 or E3+3) signed a six-month deal on Tehran’s nuclear program in Geneva after several rounds of tight negotiations.

Based on the interim deal (the Joint Plan of Action), the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to suspend its 20% enrichment for a period of six months.

The breakthrough deal, which has come into effect since January 20, stipulates that over the course of six months, Iran and the six countries will draw up a comprehensive nuclear deal which will lead to a lifting of the whole sanctions on Iran.
