Mursi Gave State Secrets to Iran: Egypt Prosecutor
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - An Egyptian prosecutor claimed that the country's ousted president, Mohamed Mursi, gave state secrets to an Iranian military body.
At the second hearing of Mursi’s trial for espionage on Sunday, Tamer el-Firgani, said Mursi and 35 other Muslim Brotherhood members had revealed such secrets.
These include passing national defense secrets to Iran, Lebanon and Palestinians.
If convicted, Mursi could face capital punishment.
The trial, one of three that are underway against Mursi, is part of a relentless government crackdown targeting him and his Muslim Brotherhood movement since his ouster by the army in July.
On Saturday, an Egyptian court handed two-year jail terms to 31 pro-Mursi protesters on charges of invading the iconic Tahrir Square in Cairo last month, Press TV reported.
Egypt has been witnessing a crisis and anti-government demonstrations since July 3, 2013, when the Egyptian military ousted the country’s first democratically-elected president.
Since then, Egypt’s military-backed government has launched a bloody crackdown on Mursi’s supporters and arrested thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members, including the party’s senior leaders.
