Iranian Official Concerned about Outside Influence on UN
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council chided the United Nation for the state of indecision about the ongoing crisis in Syria, and voiced concern that the global body has come under the influence of certain countries.
In a Sunday meeting with UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Tehran, Ali Shamkhani expressed concern for the counterproductive influence that some “anti-stability” countries exert over the UN.
Pointing to the prolonged crisis in Syria, Shamkhani stressed that the Syrian nation’s willpower should be considered to formulate any political process in the war-torn country.
He once again underscored the Islamic Republic’s “principal stance” towards the Syria crisis, which is based on “active cooperation and support for the plans that focus on an end to the bloodshed” in the Arab country.
Brahimi, for his part, underlined Iran’s significant, positive role in the regional developments, the Syrian crisis in particular, and called on Tehran to assist the UN with a political solution to the turmoil in Syria in a bid to stop the human catastrophe there.
Syrians, according to the UN, are about to replace Afghans as the world's largest refugee population. So far 2.4 million have fled a conflict that has killed 140,000 people since 2011.
