Iran Offers Condolences to South Korea over Ferry Disaster

TEHRAN (Tasnim) — Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham offered the country’s deepest sympathy to the families of the victims of a ferry sinking in South Korea.

In a message published on Friday, Afkham announced that the Iranian nation and government express their condolences to the South Korean people and government on the tragic event.

The South Korean ferry carrying 462 people capsized and sank on Wednesday. According to local reports, the death toll rose to 28 on Friday as divers raced to reach the hundreds of people still believed to be inside ship.

Of the 462 people aboard, 325 were students from Danwon High School in Ansan, about 20 miles south of Seoul.

They had been on an overnight voyage to Jeju, a popular resort island, where they were scheduled for a four-day field trip and sightseeing. Some 271 people are still unaccounted for.
