Tehran Condemns Terrorist Blasts in Baghdad
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the recent terrorist bomb blasts in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad that killed at least 37 people and injured several others.
At least 37 people were killed and several others were wounded after a series of explosions rocked an election campaign rally in Baghdad on Friday.
The explosions struck as some 10,000 people gathered at the Industrial Stadium in eastern Baghdad for an election campaign ahead of the April 30 parliamentary polls.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though an al-Qaeda-linked group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) uses similar brutal tactics.
Reacting to the tragic incident in the neighboring Iraq, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Saturday condemned the terrorist move, and renewed call on the international community to decisively support the Iraqi government and nation in the fight against terrorism.
“The terrorists have extended the range of their inhumane measures in Iraq by abusing the existing conditions in the region and the double-standard attitude taken by certain countries towards the phenomenon of terrorism and extremism,” the spokeswoman explained.
She added that the terrorists have hatched a plot to disrupt the process of the upcoming elections in the Arab country.
Afkham also expressed the hope that Iraq would be able to maintain the path to stability, establishment of security and development with “national solidarity and integrity."
The Friday blasts highlight the violence that has plagued Iraq recently. The UN said 8,868 people were killed in 2013, and more than 1,400 people were killed in the first two months of this year alone.
