Have More Coffee to Lower Diabetes Risk

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Drinking more coffee may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, new research suggests.

To assess the association between coffee and tea consumption and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes, Shilpa N. Bhupathiraju, MD and colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health gathered data from three research groups over a 20 year span.

Participants who drank more than one additional cup of coffee per day (median change=1.69 cups/day) compared to those who made no change in consumption during a four-year period were 11% less likely (95% CI 3-18%) to develop type 2 diabetes over the subsequent four years.

Those who reported decreasing their coffee intake by two cups, compared to those who made no changes in coffee consumption were 17% more likely (95% CI, 8-26%) to develop type 2 diabetes.

"These findings further demonstrate that, for most people, coffee may have health benefits," noted the researchers.

"But coffee is only one of many factors that influence diabetes risk. More importantly, individuals should watch their weight and be physically active."
