Iranian President Condoles with Afghan Nation over Deadly Landslide

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a message extended his condolences to the Afghan nation and government over the disastrous landslide in Badakhshan province that has killed hundreds of people.

In the message to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President Rouhani expressed sympathy for the families of the victims as well as the Afghan government.

The Iranian president also prayed for immediate recovery of those injured in the tragedy.

Rouhani also announced that the Iranian government and people are prepared to provide their spiritual and material assistance for the brotherly people of Afghanistan.

Hundreds of people have been killed and more than 2,000 are missing after a landslide smashed into a village in a mountainous area of northern Afghan province of Badakhshan.

Triggered by heavy rain, the side of a mountain collapsed into the village in Argo district at around 11 am as people were trying to recover their belongings and livestock after a smaller landslip hit their homes a few hours earlier.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by difficult conditions due to a week of heavy rain. Seasonal rains and spring snow melt have caused heavy destruction across large swathes of northern Afghanistan, killing more than 100 people.
