Iran, G5+1 Could Reach Agreement: Russian Deputy FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there is hope that delegations from Iran and the sextet of world powers could eventually come to a consensus over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

“It is inspiring that the approaches of the G5+1 group and the Iranian delegation lie in the same plane, that is, there is hope that the structure of the document, its composition and components will eventually be agreed,” Ryabkov was quoted as saying by Voice of Russia on Thursday.

“In other words, we will get some general matrix. But we haven't gone any further than that so far,” he said.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) on Friday resumed the third day of nuclear talks that began on May 14 in the Austrian capital.

Diplomats from both sides are seeking to hammer out a final deal on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

The Russian deputy foreign minister, however, believes that the two sides are “going on circles” to some extent.

“There are mixed impressions from the current round. There have been several serious attempts to move on to practical work to compose a draft in its various aspects. But this is not the main point. The main point is that the parameters of the future agreement are being discussed very intensively and are sparkling a lot of disputes. The negotiation logic suggests that if the parties to the talks begin to experience serious problems, the work on the text automatically slows down,” Ryabkov said.

“So we are going in circles to some extent and are trying to find a way out of this situation because everyone understands that time is running out and problems may pile up if the current pace continues,” he said.
