Iran’s Leader Pardons 72 Convicts Found Guilty by Court-Martials
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei pardoned or commuted prison terms of 72 individuals convicted by the Iranian Armed Force’s judiciary.
Ayatollah Khamenei on Thursday granted amnesty for the convicts on the occasion of a great Muslim celebration, known in the Islamic world as Eid ul-Maba’th, which commemorates the first revelation of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The pardon was granted at the request of Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani.
Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.
The clemency, however, does not apply to all types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.
Muslims all around the world are prepared to celebrate the Eid ul-Maba’th, which falls on the 27th day of Rajab, a month in the lunar calendar.
The history-making event occurred on August 10, 610 A.D. when Prophet Muhammad received the 1st revelation.
