Rouhani: Muslim World Should Be at Forefront of Fight against Extremism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on the leaders of the Islamic countries to try their hardest to promote unity and the spirit of brotherhood among Muslims.

“The flames of violence and extremism are flaring across the Muslim world, and ignorance and extremism have paved the way for the realization of the longtime plot of the enemies of Islam to foment discord and sectarian and tribal strife,” President Rouhani stated in a message issued on Friday.

In his message addressed to the heads of state and governments of the Muslim countries, Rouhani also congratulated them on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, which starts in Islamic countries on Saturday or Sunday.

He also urged leaders of Muslim nations to close ranks against violence and extremism in the world.

“It is necessary for the Muslim world to be once more the standard-bearer for the campaign against violence and extremism and the harbinger of peace and mercy in the world,” the Iranian president said.

Rouhani’s remarks come against the backdrop of attacks in Iraq by the Takfiri militants of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

In early June, following its large-scale offensives in Iraq, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized control of most parts of Mosul, the second most populous city in Iraq and its surrounding Nineveh province.

The terrorists’ attacks have reportedly forced more than half a million people in Nineveh Province to flee their homes.

The Takfiri (extremist) terrorists are said to have entered Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to destabilize the Arab country.
