Iran Welcomes Appointment of New UN Envoy for Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry welcomed the appointment of the new United Nations special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and said Tehran is ready to help him fulfill mission.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the UN special envoy for Syria and announces its readiness to help him achieve success in his new mission in light of realities on the ground in Syria, especially after the recent presidential election in the country,” Afkham said on Tuesday.

“Since the start of the Syrian crisis, the Islamic Republic of Iran has always placed emphasis on a political solution to the crisis and had full cooperation with Kofi Annan and Lakhdar Brahimi, former UN envoys to Syria,” she stated.

Afkham also expressed the hope that de Mistura would play an effective role in restoring peace and tranquility to Syria considering his experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On July 10, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that he has appointed veteran diplomat de Mistura as the new special envoy tasked with seeking peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Syria.

De Mistura, who has served as the head of the UN missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, will take on the peace facilitation role previously held by Lakhdar Brahimi, who resigned in May.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. In all, nearly 3 million Syrians have crossed into neighboring Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan, while another 6.5 million remain displaced within Syria's borders.
