Rouhani: Iran Ready to Help Myanmar Improve Ties with Muslims

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced his concern about the conditions of Muslims in Myanmar, saying that Tehran is ready to help the country improve its relations with Muslims.

"We hope that (Muslim) minorities in Myanmar will continue their daily life without facing any problems," President Rouhani stated during a meeting with Myanmar's new ambassador to Tehran, U Aung Khin Soe, on Tuesday.

President Rouhani emphasized that Iran is prepared to help resolve Muslims’ problems in Myanmar in cooperation with the government.

He also expressed Tehran's readiness to promote bilateral relations with Naypyidaw, and said Iran attaches great significance to expanding ties with Asian countries.

Myanmar’s new ambassador, who submitted his credential to president Rouhani, for his part, said the two countries have always enjoyed amicable relations.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million, has been gripped by sectarian violence in recent years, leaving hundreds of people dead and thousands homeless in attacks by Buddhist extremists on Rohingya Muslims.

The UN recognizes the Rohingya Muslims living in Myanmar’s Rakhine State as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities.
