UN Envoy Hails Iran’s Influence in Settling Regional Conflicts

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - UN resident coordinator in Iran acknowledged the Islamic Republic as an “influential player” that can contribute to settlement of regional conflicts in Gaza, Syria and Iraq.

“Iran is an influential and respective player in the geopolitics of this region (the Middle East),” Garry Lewis said in Tehran on Wednesday.

He also gave details about the measures the United Nations has taken to extinguish the “fires” in the region, referring to the Israeli attack on Gaza, the Syrian crisis and the violence in Iraq.

Lewis underlined that with its influence, Iran can very well assist the UN in addressing those regional crises.

“The United Nations very much counts on Iran’s influence and perspective to help bring an end to all three of these fires in our region,” he stated.

In Gaza, death toll from the Israeli military strike, which began on July 8, has exceeded 1,800 with more than 9,000 others reported injured.

Elsewhere in Syria, a deadly violence has gripped the Arab country since March 2011. More than 130,000 people have lost their lives and millions have been displaced due to the crisis.

And Iraq is also witnessing a spate of violence, which escalated after militants from the Takfiri ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) terrorist group took control of parts of the country in early June.

Meanwhile, the UN has always highlighted Iran’s great role in bringing an end to the regional conflicts.

Back in June, Special Coordinator of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)-United Nations Joint Mission in Syria Sigrid Kaag admired Iran for its measures to establish peace and stability to the Arab country.
