Iran Launches Enriched UO2 Production Facility

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) on Saturday inaugurated an industrial facility that produces enriched UO2 (uranium dioxide) at the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) of the central province of Isfahan.

The new plant, which produces enriched UO2 below 5 percent purity, was inaugurated by Ali Akbar Salehi on the occasion of the Government Week that begins on August 24.

The Iranian official said the inauguration of the unit comes in the framework of the interim nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 which was clinched in the Swiss city of Geneva back in November.

The product of the plant will be utilized to manufacture fuel tablets and ultimately to produce fuel rods to be used in the nuclear power plants, such as the one in Bushehr.

UO2, also known as urania, is a radioactive, crystalline powder that naturally occurs in the mineral uraninite, used in nuclear fuel rods in nuclear reactors.
