Iran’s President Starts Tour of Central Asia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran's president on Monday left Tehran for Kazakhstan as part of his tour of Central Asia which will also take him to Tajikistan.

A high-ranking delegation, including Head of the Presidential Office Mohammad Nahavandian, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Industries, Mines and Commerce Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, Minister of Agricultural Jihad Mahmoud Hojjati, Head of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization Masoud Soltanifar and President's Special Aide Hossein Fereidoun, is accompanying Rouhani during his 5-day visit to the two central Asian countries.

During the visit to Kazakhstan, Rouhani will have several meetings with senior Kazakh officials including his counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev to discuss ways to expand bilateral ties between Tehran and Astana.

He also is scheduled to pay an official visit to Tajikistan in a bid to participate in the next summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which will be held in Dushanbe.

The presidents will also hold meetings on the sidelines of the SCO summit and it is expected that a number of cooperation agreements will be signed in the talks.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a political, economic and military organization which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Mongolia are observer states of the SCO.
