Iran’s First Lithium Battery Factory Enters Service
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian defense minister on Tuesday inaugurated the country’s first-ever industrial plant manufacturing various types of rechargeable lithium batteries for both military and civilian applications.
In a ceremony to inaugurate the factory, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said it has been set up by the local experts of the Organization of Energy Resources Promotion, a subsidiary of the country’s Defense Ministry.
The new plant has an annual production capacity of 2.5 million ampere-hours (Ah) generated by different types of flat and cylindrical rechargeable batteries for civilian and military applications, the minister explained.
The factory products will satisfy demands of the country’s armed forces, added Dehqan.
Comprised of 11 manufacturing units and a laboratory equipped with advanced apparatus for quality control, the industrial plant produces 16 types of large format and cylindrical lithium rechargeable cells.
There are two kinds of lithium batteries, both of which contain very high levels of energy, usually in small cases.
Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are rechargeable, are common in consumer electronics, such as in mobile phones and laptops. They are also one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics, with a high energy density, no memory effect, and only a slow loss of charge when not in use.
And the second type includes Lithium metal batteries, which are non-rechargeable. These are also sometimes called primary (disposable) lithium batteries.
