Russia Reaffirms Backing for Iran’s “Inalienable” Nuclear Rights

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev on Tuesday confirmed Moscow’s support for Iran’s right to enjoy nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

“Entitlement to peaceful nuclear program is Iran’s inalienable and unconditional right,” Patrushev said in a meeting with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani in Tehran on Tuesday.

Heading a high-ranking political, security and economic delegation, the Russian official is on a two-day visit to Iran.

Commenting on the course of nuclear talks between Iran and the group of six world powers, to which Russia itself is a member, Patrushev insisted that the disputes over the case should be resolved through political negotiations alone.

He also stressed the necessity for constant interaction between Tehran and Moscow to gain a better understanding of priorities in the course of bilateral ties.

The Iranian official, for his part, underscored that stronger ties between Iran and Russia would serve the national interests of the both sides and would also usher in regional security and stability.

Russia, along with five other countries –China, the US, Britain, France and Germany- are in talks with Iran to reach a final nuclear agreement that would end the West’s 12-year-old standoff on Tehran’s nuclear case.

On November 24, 2013, Iran and the G5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+30 signed an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Based on the interim deal, the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran’s decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities.

In July, Tehran and the six countries agreed to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal.
