Iran Vows Support for Iraq in Battle against Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri made assurances that Tehran will fully support Baghdad in the fight against terrorist groups.

“I guarantee that the Islamic Republic of Iran, with all its power, will stand by the great nation of Iraq,” Jahangiri said in a meeting with the visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Tehran on Tuesday.

He also congratulated the Iraqi premier on the formation of a unity government in the crisis-hit country and expressed confidence that the Iraqi nation would overcome the current problems.

During the meeting, Abadi, for his part, touched upon threats posed to Iraq by terrorist groups and said the terrorists are seeking to destroy the achievements gained by the Iraqi nation over the past 11 years.

He also underlined that the terrorist groups want to sow discord among Sunni and Shiite Muslims in the Arab country. The Iraqi premier also noted that the terrorists pose a major security threat to the entire region.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Abadi arrived here in Tehran shortly before midnight on Monday on his first visit to Iran since he took office on September 8.

Earlier on Sunday, Abadi’s office, in a statement, announced that the visit was aimed at concentrating regional and international efforts on campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.
