UN Chief Says 100K Still Homeless in Gaza
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has highlighted the plight of over 100,000 Palestinians that remain homeless in the Gaza Strip following the latest Israeli onslaught, vowing plans to launch a probe into the aggression.
Addressing the UN Security Council, Ban Ki-moon further mentioned 50,000 of the currently homeless Gaza residents were being sheltering at UN school buildings in the densely-populated Palestinian enclave and in need of immediate assistance.
The UN chief also explained that the investigation will look into Israeli attacks on United Nations facilities in the besieged territory during its latest onslaught there.
Ban said he looks forward to a thorough probe into the attacks and other similar incidents in which innocent people were killed, Press TV reported.
"I look forward to a thorough investigation… of this and other incidents in which UN facilities sustained hits and many innocent people were killed," he said.
Ban, who visited Gaza last week, further underlined that he had observed mile after mile of destruction.
In one reported incident, artillery shelling by the Israeli forces reportedly killed more than a dozen displaced Palestinians being sheltered inside a UN-run school in Gaza.
The United Nations has additionally set up a commission of inquiry into possible human rights violations and war crimes committed in Gaza during the massive Israeli aggression on the Palestinian enclave.
The Panel is chaired by Canadian professor of international law William Schabas, who will report his findings by March 2015 to the UN Human Rights Council.
Nearly 2,140 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed and more than 11,000 others injured during the 51-day Israeli onslaught on Gaza. Tens of Israelis were also killed in the war.
