Iran Voices Support for Sustainable Security in Eastern Africa

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian expressed on Monday Tehran’s support for the establishment of sustainable security, growth, and peace in Eastern Africa.

In a meeting with Mahboub Maalim, the executive secretary of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Amir Abdollahian said his country would support the peacekeeping operation in Eastern Africa.

The two sides also discussed practical ways to expand Iran-IGAD ties in Africa in a whole range of fields including implementing agriculture, irrigation and electricity projects.

Maalim, for his part, described as “important” the cooperation between Iran and the African organization.

The two sides also agreed on the mechanism for developing the framework of cooperation between Iran and IGAD.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Eastern Africa is a regional organization comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
