IRGC Adviser: Plentiful Evidence on US, UK Role in 2009 Sedition
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior adviser to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commander said the review of Iran's 2009 post-election riots reveals abundant evidence on the US and Britain's direct involvement in masterminding, organizing and controlling the seditious move.
Addressing a Tuesday conference held in Tehran to study Britain’s role in the 2009 sedition, Hamidreza Moqaddamfar blamed Washington and London for hatching plots to overthrow the government in Iran.
The 2009 sedition is a term referring to the unrest and riot that broke out following presidential election, when some supporters of two of the candidates that lost the election raised allegations of electoral fraud and held sporadic violent rallies in Tehran and some other cities.
Moqaddamfar said the plot was masterminded by the US, while Britain was tasked with implementing the hostile project with its Tehran embassy as the base to coordinate the riots.
He said the foreign elements had worked on the sedition plots for some 20 years with the US officials mulling regime change in Iran since the final years of the war imposed by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on the country.
"They miscalculated the situation and thought the sedition plot would topple the Islamic Republic," said the senior IRGC adviser.
In December 2009, a number of rioters also desecrated the mourning ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein (AS), Shiite Muslims’ third Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
Thereafter, millions of Iranians from different walks of life took to the streets to protest against the desecration.
The nationwide massive rallies, seen as the nation’s renewed allegiance to the Islamic Republic, also put an end to the post-election unrest in the country.
December 30 is now seen as one of the most important days in the history of the Islamic Revolution. Every year, Iranian people mark the event as an epic which restored tranquility to the nation and nipped the sedition against the Islamic establishment in the bud.
