Reopening of Embassies Not on Agenda of Talks With US : Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham denied the reports that the reopening of embassies will be discussed in talks between Tehran and Washington.

The negotiations between Tehran and Washington only include the issues related to Tehran’s nuclear energy program, Afkham reiterated.

The Iranian spokeswoman made the comments in reaction to a report published by an Arab media outlet.

Afkham denied the report as baseless saying that no official from Iran’s Foreign Ministry has made any comments in this regard.

US embassy in Tehran was shut down in 1979 following its seizure by Iranian university students.

On November 4, 1979, and less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution that toppled a US-backed monarchy, Iranian university students seized the US embassy in Tehran, which had become a center of espionage.

The students who seized the embassy later published documents proving that the compound was indeed engaged in plans and measures to overthrow the Islamic republic.
