Chinese Foreign Minister Due in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to arrive in Tehran on Saturday for a three-day official visit at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Heading a high-ranking delegation including a couple of his deputies, Wang Yi will hold meetings with senior Iranian officials, including Zarif, to discuss the latest regional and international developments as well as mutual cooperation between Iran and China.

Avenues for expanding cooperation in different political, economic, and cultural fields will be explored by the Iranian and Chinese officials.

This is Wang's first official visit to Tehran and he is the first Chinese foreign minister to pay a visit to Iran after almost seven years.

Earlier in November 2014, Zarif had emphasized the importance of Tehran-Beijing ties, and said the Islamic Republic is willing to establish “strategic relations” with the East Asian country.

China is one of the members of the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UNSecurity Council members plus Germany), which is in talks with Tehran to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Iran’s nuclear energy program.
