Iran to Open World’s Biggest Olefin Production Project in Coming Weeks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The world’s biggest project to produce olefin will come into operation in Iran by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20).

The project with a production capacity of about two million tons of ethylene per year is being completed by Iran’s National Petrochemical Company (NPC) in two phases in Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in the southern province of Bushehr.

This project will feed petrochemical units of Andimeshk, Ilam, Lorestan, Kermanshah, Kurdistan, Mahabad and Miandoab.

In organic chemistry, olefin is an unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Olefins, including ethylene and propylene, are one of the two most common petrochemical classes.

Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical production over the past few years.

Iran has the capacity to produce 60 million tons of petrochemicals per year, however, only 68 percent of this capacity is tapped on average, due to a variety of reasons, including lack of raw material.

The Islamic Republic, which holds the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves and the largest natural gas reserves, is determined to become the biggest petrochemical producer in the Middle East.
