Afghan Parliament Urges Revoking Kabul-Washington Security Pact
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Afghan lawmakers urged the national unity government to call off Kabul-Washington Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) in protest at an increase of insecurity and instability in the South Asian country.
According to Tasnim dispatches, the Afghan parliament made the move to protest at the spread of insecurity in the provinces of Sar-e Pol, Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan.
Under the agreement signed between the US and Afghanistan, Washington is obliged to provide arms support for the Afghan security forces and prevent insecurity from rising in the country, the MPs stated.
They emphasize that the US government has not been committed to its obligations under the security deal.
Afghanistan's House Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi announced that the security situation has reached a point that big cities in northern parts of the country are on the brink of collapse at the hands of armed opposition groups.
It comes after Taliban militants stepped up violent attacks on foreign and government targets over the past weeks.
The insurgents have recently announced the start of their annual spring offensive against Afghan security forces and the US-led foreign troops across the country.
The US-led combat mission in Afghanistan ended on December 31, 2014. However, at least 13,500 foreign forces have remained in the country in what Washington calls a support mission.
The Taliban have been fighting the Afghan government and its foreign backers since their hardline government was ousted from power by the US invasion in 2001.
