Iranian Diplomat Criticizes Talk of Establishing Syria No-Fly Zone

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian censured certain countries for their attempts to create a no-fly zone over Syria, saying that such measures would not help promote security in the region.

"Speaking about the creation of no-fly and buffer zones (over the Syrian territory) is a repetition of previous mistakes and will not contribute to regional security and stability," Amir Abdollahian said on the sidelines of the 42nd annual meeting of foreign ministers of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Kuwait.

He further reiterated that the Syrian crisis should be resolved through political means, adding that there is a necessity for Syria's neighbors to control their common borders with the Arab country and prevent the movement of terrorists in the region.

Turkey has been urging the US for months to impose a no-fly zone over its border with Syria but they have not reached an agreement on this issue.

According to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has already coordinated the creation of no-fly and buffer zones with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Sputnik reported.

Ankara seeks to establish such a zone to protect Syrian opposition militias it intends to train from government airstrikes, according to US media reports.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million others wounded during the conflicts waged by foreign-backed terrorists in Syria.
