Iranian Diplomat Reiterates Tehran’s Unwavering Support for Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian stressed that Tehran is steady in its support for Syria since the policy is based on a “strategic” view.

“There has been no change in Iran’s right policy of supporting Syria,” Amir Abdollahian told reporters on Tuesday.

“Our support for Syria in the fight against terrorism is based on a strategic view, (and is) not a tactical move,” he added.

He further highlighted the role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the fight against terrorism as well as bolstering unity in the Arab country, adding that the Syrian army and nation have given a crushing response to terrorism.

“I believe that repeated use of wrong military and security approaches in Syria would be a strategic mistake and would violate the rights of Syrian people,” the Iranian official stressed.

In similar remarks on June 2, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the resistance of the Syrian government and people against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that Tehran is determined to side with Damascus to the end of the crisis.

Speaking in a meeting with Syrian parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham in Tehran, Rouhani expressed optimism about the ultimate victory of the Syrian nation and army in the fight against terrorists.

"Undoubtedly, in the war between the truth and falsehood, the former is victorious," he said, adding that "We are confident that foreign countries will not be able to impose their conditions on the Syrian nation."

Syria has been gripped with civil war since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.

The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group controls a territory covering areas between Syria and Iraq.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
