Iran Ready to Help UN-Backed Yemen Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) –Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman urged political solutions to Yemen's conflicts, adding that Iran is prepared to contribute to the upcoming UN-sponsored talks on Yemen, slated for this weekend in Switzerland.

"We hope that the issue of Yemen would proceed within the framework of political dialogues," Marziyeh Afkham said on Wednesday, adding that Iran is ready to contribute to that process.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran encourages political solutions, and we hope the Yemen talks that are due to take place on June 14 would move forward with a political solution," she told reporters in a press conference.

Afkham also took a swipe at Saudi Arabia for obstructing the delivery of humanitarian supplies into Yemen, something she said has also sparked protest from the international aid institutions.

The United Nations is planning to convene peace talks on Yemen in Geneva on June 14.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies began to launch deadly air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

According to Yemen's Freedom House Foundation, the Saudi airstrikes have claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Yemeni people so far while more than 7,000 others have been wounded, most of them civilians.
