Sanctions Have Failed to Halt Iran’s Progress: First VP
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri on Tuesday referred to anti-Iran sanctions as irritating, but at the same time noted that they have not succeeded in hindering Tehran’s progress.
Sanctions are irritating and cause delay in some fields, but they have failed to halt the country’s activities, Jahangiri said, speaking to reporters in Shahre Kord, a city in western Iran.
The Iranian VP further explained that thanks to the high level of technical and engineering capabilities in the country, alternative solutions are figured out immediately after a problem happens.
Jahangiri also referred to the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and world powers over the country’s nuclear energy program, and reiterated that the negotiating team will safeguard all nuclear achievements of the country.
Over the past years, Iran has been under tough Western sanctions which target oil exports, shipping, airlines, petrochemical and automotive industries, banking system and currency, and many other areas which have a direct bearing on the lives of people.
The majority of sanctions imposed on the country in recent years has originated from Western claims that Tehran is trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of peaceful activities.
Iran has repeatedly dismissed the claim as baseless, saying that its nuclear energy program is absolutely peaceful.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) are in talks to hammer out a lasting accord that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran's civilian nuclear program.
On April 2, Iran and the sextet reached a framework nuclear agreement in Lausanne, Switzerland, with both sides committed to push for a final deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), until the end of June.
